Simultaneous vibroseis 3D seismic data recording for optimum field development-HFVS 3D seismic data acquisition and processing
Authors Y. Sakallıoglu and Z. HengThis case study presents a simultaneous vibroseis data recording and processing techniques for optimum field development in Libya. In order to acquire high trace density and high resolution 3D seismic data, the first High Fidelity Vibratory Seismic (HFVSSM) survey carried out in Libya in 2008. HFVS is an Exxon Mobil patented method that has been licensed by a number of contractors which technique allows data from multiple vibratory sources to be simultaneously recorded during the acquisition phase and separated in the processing stage. Besides the HFVS method requires one or more individual vibrators comprise a vibrator set and the recording of vibrator motion signals on each vibrator for every sweep that these actual motion signals can be used to process the data. The HFVS point source/receiver recording technique is providing high productivity and high resolution data. Processing records as unique source points allows for correction of intra array statics and differential velocity move-out which would not be possible with conventional recording where vibrator arrays are summed in the field. Measured vibrators ground force signals are used for the data inversion and separation provide more reliable data. Additionally, denser 3D geometry leads to finer spatial sampling to avoid aliasing problem and increase resolution. HFVS 3D data recording is different than conventional.

Rezervuarın kılcal çatlaklı yapısı CO2’in süpürme verimliliğini olumsuz etkilemektedir.

Well Screening Criteria For Water Shut-Off Polymer Gel Injection In Carbonate Medium
Authors S. Canbolat and M. ParlaktunaHigh water production in oil fields is one of the major difficulties for the petroleum industry, as reservoirs become mature. Costs of lifting, handling, separation and disposal of large amounts of produced water; environmental concerns about this water; increased corrosion rates; higher tendency for emulsion; and, scale formation are among the main problems due to water production which often decrease the economic life of a well. Therefore, there is a need to reduce excessive water production. WSO polymer gel injection is a successful method for naturally fractured reservoirs which generally exhibits extreme water cut values. Gels are used in carbonate reservoirs that are dominated by secondary porosity features. This technology will preferentially flow into these features and selectively reduce permeability to water. Success of the application is based on the proper selection of the wells. Currently, gel polymer treatments have an 85-90% success rate in reducing water production and, in many cases, increasing oil production. Gel polymer systems have a penetration property greater than the mechanical methods and cement to provide a deeper barrier against the excess water. Also, plugging due to gel polymers can be removed unlike physical cement plugging which leads to a permanent plug in the porous media. The residual oil cannot be produced from the treated region by cementing method after decreasing of excess water production. The production well treatment involves injection of the gellant into the fractures or high permeability zones that produces a lot of water, thereby reducing oil production. This application not only improves draw-down from the productive zones; but, it also reduces or eliminates the costs associated with the produced water. Candidate Field for WSO application is located in southeastern Turkey which is an anticline structure. The field was discovered in January 1990 and has been on production since 1990. The structural contour map top of D formation is given in Figure.1. The field is a typical carbonate reservoir with primary drive mechanism of bottom water drive. Four formation (Zone-A,B,C and D) are oil bearing throughout the field. Zone-A is dominantly mud-stone. The formation is not expected to have matrix porosity or inter-granular porosity. Accordingly they can act as seal. Fracture porosity is present but limited, mostly in microfracture type and adds limited reserve potential when compared to the reserves created by matrix and intergranular porosity. However, permeability created by fractures is potentially very high. Zone-B is an organic rich limestone and may also act as a seal. Zone-C is a limestone. Upper part of C formation (K-C member) is also reservoir (in quality) with its porosity and permeability values. Zone-D is a limestone-dolomite formation. Zone-D which has a good secondary porosity developed by fresh water leaching and dolomitization.

The Effect of Clay Minerals of Reservoir Formations on Chemical and Rheological Properties of Heavy Oil by Steam Distillation
Authors Y.T. Osgouei, M. Parlaktuna and Ş. DemirciAn experimental study was carried out to investigate the role of various clay and non-clay minerals present in carbonate formations on steam distillation process. Dead oils samples (100 g) of two heavy oil reservoirs from Southeastern Turkey with 30 g water and 10 g crushed rock (limestone + mineral) were kept under steam pressure in a batch autoclave reactor for a period of 40 hours, and the results were compared as the changes in the density, viscosity and chemical composition (SARA). Three different minerals (bentonite, kaolinite, and zeolite) were added to the crushed limestone to observe their effects on the rheological and compositional changes during steam distillation process. The results of this experimental study showed that minerals have catalytic effect during steam distillation. Along with the increase in viscosity and density of remaining oil after steam distillation the chemical composition also changes. There is an increase in the asphaltene content while concentration of polar compounds decrease as the result of steam distillation.

Experimental and Simulation Study of Matrix Fracture Interaction in Sandstone Core Samples by CO2, CH4 And N2 Injection
Authors S. Bülbül and M. ParlaktunaIn this study, it is aimed at investigating matrixfracture interaction mechanisms with gas injection in a fractured sandstone core system. Influence of a fracture on matrix-fracture interaction processes and effects of type of the gas injected (namely, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen), initial gas saturation and diffusion coefficient in terms of oil recovery are studied by an experimental and simulation work. Gas oil gravity drainage and diffusion mechanisms are studied by introducing CO2, N2 and CH4 gases to the system and obtaining corresponding oil recoveries with time. An artificial fracture is created around Berea sandstone cores and system is kept at a pressure of 250 psi and at a reservoir temperature of 70 °C. n-decane is used as the oil phase. Experiments carried out with CO2 injection has resulted in higher oil recoveries than experiments carried out with CH4 and N2 respectively. It is obtained that availability of initial gas saturation in matrix increased recovery in CO2 experiments. A simulation study is also carried out to compare experimental results using CMG (Computer Modeling Group Ltd.) WinProp (Microsoft Windows™ based Phase-Behavior and Fluid Property Program) and GEM (Generalized Equation-of-State Model Compositional Reservoir Simulator) on a core scale basis. Keyword: Matrix-Fracture Interaction, Gas-Oil Gravity Drainage, Diffusion, CO2, N2 and Methane Injection, Oil Recovery

Reflecting Risks and Uncertainties in Reserves Estimations Using Reserves Classification Frameworks
Authors M.F. Tuğan, M. Onur and M. YılmazThe main target of all shareholders is to increase their income by producing oil and/or gas. The key parameter to produce oil and/or gas is the investments, such as purchasing licences, drilling wells, and constructing production facilities. Oil companies program their investments to a particular field by analyzing the ultimate recovery from that field, i.e. have to know their reserves and the associated risks and uncertainties. To have a better understanding on the risks and uncertainties in estimated results, resources are classified using international or local frameworks. This work will examine the two most widely used international frameworks (SPE-PRMS and UNFC), basic concepts concerning them.

Neural Network Applications of Seismic Attributes for Predicting Porosity and Production
By U. ÇelikThe introduction of seismic attributes to the exploration world has brought another dimension to the seismic data interpretation. Further development has introduced another approach known as multi-attribute analysis which uses artificial neural networks (ANNs) to combine the multiple attributes to predict desired reservoir properties. Seismic attribute analysis using neural network applications has become an important tool for understanding the physical features and internal structure of reservoirs. Understanding such features is vital to provide effective strategies for exploration and exploitation in both new and old survey areas.

A Simulation Study of Immiscible CO2 WAG Injection in the Bati Kozluca Heavy Oil Field
More LessBati Kozluca field is a heavy oil carbonate reservoir discovered in 1984; it is located in the South East of Turkey, close to Syria border. The reservoir began primary production in 1985, developed with 41 wells producing 12 API oil. The permeability and porosity are 500 mD and 25% respectively. Reservoir depth is up to 1520 m and the original reservoir pressure is 2000 psia. Reservoir thickness is 133 m with 17% of net to gross ratio. Main constraints for oil recovery of the field are the high viscosity and low aquifer support. To increase the oil recovery, reservoir management and re-evaluation studies started in 2000. First EOR methods were screened and it was decided to apply immiscible CO2 injection. There is a CO2 reservoir at Camurlu Field which is 10 km away from the Bati Kozluca Field so that CO2 injection method has the priority among other EOR methods. In 2003, immiscible CO2 injection was started to increase the oil recovery. Until 2007, immiscible CO2 injection had been continued. However, the increase in the recovery was limited because of the quick breakthrough and adverse mobility ratio between CO2 and oil. In 2007, to overcome the problems associated with the mobility ratio, water alternating CO2 injection was started. According to results, oil recovery increased and also water and gas production decreased after applying WAG method. This paper describes the field-wide simulation study conducted to predict the future reservoir performance of the black oil simulation model under various operating and development strategies. Firstly, available data is screened and quality of the data is evaluated and then the model is history-matched on both the field and the well scale. Continuous CO2 injection and WAG methods are considered and WAG method is found the most favorable method to increase the oil recovery and to decrease the amount of CO2 injected.

Reservoir Simulation Study of Bozova Oil Field
Authors M.C. Ertürk and M. YılmazBozova Oil Field, with 1.4 km2 area, is located in the southeastern part of Turkey. Reservoir thickness ranges 27 to 40 m with 60 % of net to gross ratio and it is found at depth around 2400 m. In terms of quality, the reservoir has moderate porosity, low permeability, and water and compaction drive mechanisms with an average oil density of 23 API and initial pressure of 2550 psia. To date, 8 wells have been drilled, 4 of which are active and production accumulated throughout 18 years amounts approximately 1.6 million barrels. The purpose of the study is to improve a full-field reservoir simulation for Bozova field including data review, history matching and production forecast. The first step of that is quality-checked of geologic model to accept it for commencing of the simulation project. In the next step, scrutinizing of available PVT and petrophysical data as input is essential part to honor the reservoir system in a proper way. After initialization of the base case, calibration of reservoir simulation model to the historical production data is a required step before a reservoir model can be utilized for making predictions of the future performance of the reservoir. In the study, several development strategies were simulated by launching do nothing case, additional new wells, and waterflooding case. As a result, all those forecasts will give us insight into different approaches and the result of alternative applications causing production increasing in Bozova field.

Eksik Verili Rezervuar Karakterizasyonu Problemlerinde Kısmi Çifte Olasılıklı Parametre Tahmin Yönteminin Kullanımı
Authors M.D.

Numerical simulation of two-phase oil and water flow
Authors A. Sever, Ö.İ. Türeyen and M. Onurmethods. However, there exist numerous articles that attempt to develop and present analytical solutions in the literature for the two-phase flow of oil and water under some restricted assumptions (e.g., homogenous reservoir). Analytical solutions may be easy and fast to apply, but may not well represent the oil and water flow because of their restrictive assumptions. On the other hand, numerical methods are more appealing to solve the oil and water phase flow for more general cases. Due to its generality, in this study, we consider numerical based methods (i.e., finite difference methods) to solve the diffusivity equation for oil-water flow and investigate the pressure and water saturation behaviors of a vertical well and reservoir for the cases where analytical solutions are not available. A general discretized equationis derived for simulating two-phase water and oil flow in three-dimensional (3-D) r-θ-z cylindrical coordinate system using the finite difference method. Then, this general difference equation is solved by considering two different methods. The first method is based on a fully implicit solution of both pressure and saturation (FIMPS) using the Newton method, and the other method is based on a fully implicity solution of pressure and explicit solution of saturation, which is known as the IMPES method. Derivations for both methods are given in this study. The solutions generated from the simulators developed during the course of this work were compared and validated with the solutions generated from a commericial software CMG - IMEX.Moreover, we also validate the simulator for some benchamark cases taken from the papers presented in the literature. Finally, some well-test applications are run with the simulator and pressure differences and their derivatives (diagnostic plots) are analyzed. This process is achieved with the commercial well-test software ECRIN. Behaviour and effects of mechanical skin on diagnostic plots for injection and fall-off tests are discussed.

A numerical study of the pressure behavior of a vertical well in a dry gas reservoir
Authors C. Alan, Ö.İ. Türeyen and M. OnurPredicting production performance of a dry gas reservoir for reservoir management acquires understanding the behavior of pressure transients and fluid distribution over both space and time. In recent years, reservoir simulators have been extensively used to build various reservoir and well models to investigate and visualize the process under a series of potential scenarios, such as drilling new wells and injecting fluids. The objective of this study is to develop and present applications of a general purpose two-dimensional (2D) r-z, fully implicit, single-phase, real gas simulation model with a single well located at the center of a cylindrical reservoir. The simulation model includes wellbore storage, skin and non-Darcy flow effects. As the problem is non-linear, solve pressures at each gridblock at a specific time may require more than one iteration. Since two different methods called as functional iteration and Newton’s methods are applicable to solve such systems, they are analyzed, verified using at least two different solvers with respect to accuracy and speed. The simulator is verified by a well-known well test analysis software to perform a number of real field applications such as standard and routine tests of natural gas industry (i.e., flow-afterflow, isochronal and modified isochronal tests) for both partially and fully penetrated wells either in a single or multilayered systems. The simulator is also capable of conducting a packer-probe test called as Mini-Drill Stem Test (MiniDST) for estimation of reservoir properties such as permeability, skin, etc. The effect of Non-Darcy flow on pressure solutions at the tested well as well as throughout the reservoir for the entire flow rate history is also investigated in a different manner than described in mathematical formulation such that the a non-Darcy flow area in radial direction is introduced and restricted to a region of a specific radius which is concentric with wellbore.

Production Performance Analysis of Coal Bed Methane, Shale Gas, and Tight Gas Reservoirs with Different Well Trajectories and Completion Techniques
Authors M.C. Ertürk and Ç. SinayuçThe vast majority of gas production all over the world comes from conventional reservoirs that become ever-increasingly difficult to discover and exploit. However, business cycles and higher gas prices affect and change the gas production strategy of the industry. Concordantly, the significance of unconventional gas reservoirs has been increasing for recent years owing to economic viability of their development and, therefore identification of the challenges and common pitfalls regarding those have been gaining importance at the same time. In the last decades, the exploitation of unconventional gas reservoirs such as coalbed methane, shale gas, and tight gas has become an ever increasing part of world gas supply. With state of the art technology and high gas prices, these resources can be developed by achieving economical gas production. The economic viability of many unconventional gas developments hinges on effective stimulation of extremely low permeability rock by creating very complex well trajectories and fracture networks. Generally, unconventional gas reservoirs are described as having very large hydrocarbon reserves in place, a low expected ultimate recovery, and low permeability. These reservoirs cannot provide efficient amount of gas with an economical rate and they require some special stimulation treatment techniques. Mostly, horizontal wells or multilateral wells with transverse hydraulic fractures make the feasible production rates possible, and improved performance of these reservoirs should be taken into account as much accurate as possible. Evaluation of unconventional gas reservoirs is much more challenging as compared to conventional gas reservoirs due to their complex rock properties, drilling and completion techniques, and production mechanism. Each unconventional gas reservoir is unique and needs special interests to be characterized accurately. Ordinarily, it is very difficult to characterize them and choose the right recovery techniques. Accurate stimulation and determination of the unconventional gas reservoir systems plays an important role to produce natural gas commercially and optimize the recovery properly. At this point, numerical simulation approach that is the most beneficial tool to validate and predict the performance of these kinds of systems provided that adequate and reliable data are available comes into play. Although simulation of the unconventional gas reservoirs are also challenging process due to the several reasons like ultra-low permeability, desorption, complex geological characteristics, it offers remarkable potential for understanding of unconventional gas reservoirs. The main effort of this study is to investigate the well performance of coalbed methane, shale gas, and tight gas reservoirs with different well configurations and stimulation scenarios. In order to obtain the outcome of these analyses, a 3D layered geological model with a 25x25x52 grid having four different zones with different thicknesses was constructed and modified for each reservoir system with different characteristics as a means of providing some distributed properties by Petrel. On the other hand, the reason the models were created with similar areal extend is to compare the gas in place and recovery of each system. A series of reservoir simulation were performed by Eclipse as a commercial numerical simulator with two types of porosity system; dual porosity for coalbed methane and shale gas reservoirs, single porosity for tight gas reservoir. In some reservoir systems, hydraulic fractures were represented and included into the model by local grid refinement and permeability multiplier facilities of Eclipse for vertical, horizontal, and multilateral well types.

Using Rock Physics and AVO tools to determine hydrocarbon bearing zones in an exploration well, Diyarbakir Basin, Southeast Turkey
Authors S. Baytok, S. Dündar, M. Mutafçılar, B. Üstün, Ş.A. Aktepe and M. KılıçayRock physics provides a good theoretical tool and understanding of the connection between the elastic parameters and the physical properties of reservoir rocks; therefore, a relationship and a link between physical rock properties and seismic expressions can be established. This study aims to utilize rock physics and AVO theoretical tools to better determine and characterize hydrocarbon-bearing zones at a newly drilled “Well-A” in Diyarbakir Basin in the southeastern Turkey. “Well-A” is located at 10 km in distance to major producing oil fields targeting limestones of Dadas Formation and sandstones of Bedinan Formations. In the vicinity of Well-A, two exploration wells were drilled before and completed as “dry well” with minor oil and gas shows. In the area, source rocks are the shales in Dadas Formation in Diyarbakir and northern Diyarbakir area and early Cretaceous age carbonates in Adiyaman area. Reservoir rocks are early Paleocene age Sinan and Garzan Formations, late Cretaceous age carbonates of Mardin Group’s Karababa and Derdere Formations, and sandstones of Paleozoic Bedinan and Hazro Formations. There has been 2 Drill Stem Tests (DST) conducted at wellbore. First DST was successful between the depths from 2755 to 2767 m (9038-9078 ft) and 81 stand (st) gas mud mixed condensed was recovered. Second DST was between 2863-2893 m (9393-9491 ft) and 28 st. recovery was made. At this point, rock physics and AVO studies are required to aid in the determination of hydrocarbon-bearing zones for perforation. Rock physics part of this study includes the calculation of elastic parameter logs. Lame constant (λ), Lambda-Rho, Shear Modulus (μ), Mu-Rho, Young’s Modulus (E), Poisson’s Ratio (σ), Bulk Modulus (k) were calculated and used to create crossplots to determine and evaluate hydrocarbon-bearing intervals. Lambda*Rho vs. Lambda/Mu, P-Impedance vs. Vp/ Vs, porosity vs. p-wave velocity, acoustic impedance vs. elastic impedance (at 30 degrees) and Vp vs. Vs crossplots were generated and examine to determine possible reservoir intervals. Specific focus has been put on Young’s Modulus (E) and Poisson’s Ratio (σ) to determine brittle and ductile zones for a future fracking operation. Shear-wave sonic log measurement plays a crucial role in the calculation of elastic parameter logs since all the equations require shear-wave velocity information.

An Experimental Study of Silicate-Polymer Gel Systems to Seal Shallow Water Flow and Lost Circulation Zones in Top Hole Drilling
Authors A. Ay, İ.H. Gücüyener and M.V. KökPlacement of silicate based gel systems is one of the oldest methods to seal such undesired zones. For this study, sodium-silicate based gel system is investigated experimentally. This gel system is deliberately delayed multi-component system mixed as a uniform liquid at the surface but desired to form strong gel where it is placed in the well. The experimentally analyzed system is composed of distilled water, sodiumsilicate solution, polymer solution, lost circulation materials, weighting agent and organic initiator. In this study, effect of these components on gel time, gel quality and gel strength at room temperature is investigated as a function of their concentration. To be able to compare gelation time of different compositions, gel time tests were performed by following the developed method in this study. Observation codes were defined to be able to compare the gel qualities of different compositions. For gel time and quality tests, sodium-silicate (SS) concentrations from 3.5% to 15% were studied and the concentrations between 7.5% and 10% were found as optimum. Gel time is getting higher as silicate-initiator ratio (SIR) increases for these optimum concentrations. It was also determined that, addition of polymers reduces the gel time and increases the elasticity of the resulting gels. Long term gelation process was investigated by monitoring turbidity (NTU) of the mixtures and plotting NTU versus time curves. Viscosity development curves obtained from rotational viscometer at various constant shear rates indicated reduced gelation times with increasing shear rate. Furthermore, by using modified High-Pressure, High-Temperature filter press cell, it was determined that, addition of lost circulation materials increases the extrusion pressure.

A study to determine the cement slurry behaviour to prevent the fluıd migration
Authors G. Karakaya and M.V. KökIn this study, the effect of free water, which is the basic quality property of API G-Class cement, on fluid migration potential has been tested for different origin Class-G cement samples (Class G-1, 2 and 3), in combination with different physical conditions. In order to justify the quality of each cement sample, standard API G-Class quality tests were performed. The free fluid values of different origin Class-G cement samples (Class G-1, 2 and 3) were determined as %2.5, %5 and %3.2 respectively. It was found that the Class G-1 cement with the lowest free fluid content has the lowest potential for fluid migration. Moreover, static gel strength analyzer (SGSA) is used to measure the static gel strength of cement slurries to determine the time to complete transition period.

An experimental investigation of the shale inhibition properties of a quaternary amine compound
Authors B.T. Tas, I.H. Gucuyener and M. ParlaktunaDepleting oil reserves and increased costs of the oil and gas recoveries have created the need to drill in challenging formations. When drilled through, shale formations in particular always generated a wide variety of problems if conventional water-based muds are used. Furthermore, the complexity and variations in shales have compounded the task of developing suitable drilling fluids. In light of these problems, the study of shale properties and their interactions with fluids will continue to be a much-needed source of information in drilling industry. In this study a low molecular weight quaternary amine compound, which is provided by KarKim Drilling Fluids Inc., and its mixtures with sodium and potassium chloride is investigated in the aspects of capillary suction times, hot rolling recoveries, methylene blue capacities and one-dimensional free swelling properties in order to compare performances of salts and amine compound. For all test methods quaternary amine concentration from 1% to 6% by volume were studied and seen that less amount of quaternary amine compound is needed in order to obtain close shale recoveries and shale volume change potential if compared with sodium and potassium chloride. This prevents the usage of high concentration of chlorides and hence provides environmental sensitiveness. Furthermore, it was concluded that combining an amount of salt with quaternary amine compound

A Review of Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics in Prediction of Oil and Gas Wells Problems
Authors A.E. Osgouei and G. AltunComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a powerful way of modeling fluid flow, heat transfer, and related processes for a wide range of important scientific and engineering problems. Unlike experiments that only permit data to be extracted at a limited number of locations in the system (e.g. pressure and temperature probes, heat flux gauges, etc.), CFD allows the analyst to examine a large number of locations in the region of interest and yields a comprehensive set of flow parameters for examination. Simply, CFD provides the ability to theoretically simulate any physical condition. Increasing demand for energy resulted in the exploration more sources and subsequently expansion of drilling activities all over the world. Any improvement in terms of well planning, drilling and production operations can result in significant saving for the operators. It is therefore crucial to have an idea and to develop efficient strategy in the case of experimentally expensive and unpredictable oil and gas wells operation in advance. CFD has the important role in petroleum engineering applications such as studying optimization of bit performance, convective heat transfer between casings and annular fluids, flow in porous media like mud filtrate invasion, simulation of multi-phase flow for designing separators, cement displacement, erosion prediction, risk analysis during blowout event, optimization of drilling hydraulics and hole cleaning, wellbore stability analysis, cutting transport in wellbore and modeling flow through whole oil and gas wells. Presented in this study is an attempt to literately summarize estimation and modeling some problems encountered in oil and gas wells during drilling and production operations. In short, this paper evaluates some certain issues in a whole well system and details the successful application of CFD techniques to model and predict these issues before any implementation in a well. Culminated results reveal that CFD analysis can provide valuable insight that helps engineers to understand what is physically happening when such above mentioned events are faced prior to any stage of oil and gas wells operations.

Wellbore Temperature Assessment for Generic Deep Water Well in Black Sea and Mitigation of Hydrate Dissociation Risk
Authors M. Parlaktuna and M.T. ÖztürkDrilling operation expanded through deep water environments starting from mid-1980s. As drilling operations are expanded through deep water environments, hydrate forming problem is occurred as a result of low temperature and high pressure profile. This case is generally faced during production from the deep water gas wells, since during the production phase, pressure and temperature distribution through the wellbore falls on hydrate stability interval. On the other hand in the drilling & completion phase, gas generated from the shallow sediments may form hydrates in downhole equipment like; subsea well heads, hanger profiles, subsea wellhead hanger pack-offs, subsea BOP stack & BOP funnel. Moreover in case of drilling through sediments including in-situ hydrates, as drilling goes deeper, heat transfer from well target-depth through the upper well sections, with drilling fluid circulation, will occur and temperature profile through the wellbore will change. As a result of heat transfer, overheating of the shallow well bore sections become possible. In such cases wellbore stability will decrease with the dissociation of the hydrate bearing sediments for the conductor or surface casings. Also, mentioned hydrate dissociation and gas migration through the surface may cause buoyancy problems in the location and lead to the failure of the floating drilling unit, since volumetrically 1ft3 of in-situ hydrate contains as much as 170scf of gas. When considering drilling operations, hydrate forming risk can be eliminated via using kinetic or thermodynamic inhibitors in the drilling fluid system. However, at the wellbore and behind cemented casings, changes on pressure and temperature will also lead to dissociation of shallow hydrate bearing sediments. When considering regular drilling operation, severe changes on pressure profiles are not expected but heat flux from deeper sections of the well through shallower section is the major parameter which will affect hydrate stability condition on downhole. In order to mitigate the risk mentioned above, in this study, Black Sea is taken as a reference drilling environment and wellbore temperature simulations are conducted. Hydrate stability curve is determined by using the data gathered from wells drilled in the region and experimental studies conducted on hydrate existence of the Black Sea. Effect of regional parameters such as geothermal gradient of the region, target depths and operation parameters and well bore geometry changes including; hole sizes, casing shoe depths, casing specifications, circulation rates, mud weights, mud type, mud inlet and outlet temperatures are interpreted. As a result, hydrate dissociation risk for deep water well is mitigated by optimizing well geometry and operation parameters.

An investigation of the leak-off tests conducted in oil and natural gas wells drilled in Thrace Basin
Authors M. Parlaktuna, N. Karahanoğlu and B. KayaelThis study aims to analyze the leak-off tests carried out in the Thrace Basin of Turkey by Turkish Petroleum Corporation and find any relationship that may exist between leak-off test results and drilled formations as well as drilling parameters, such as mud weight, depth. The analysis of 78 leak-off tests indicated that there is no close correlation between the mud weight of test fluid and equivalent mud weight (fracture gradient) if the test is carried out within impermeable sections. On the other hand, the correlation between mud weight and equivalent mud weight increase while running the test within permeable-productive zones. It is also found that the leak-off test results are not dependent on the depth but the formation to be tested. The analyzed leak-off test results from Thrace Basin showed that the fracture gradient is not the limiting factor to set the casing of any section unless a gas show is observed during drilling operation which occurred only in 5 wells out of 78 wells analyzed.

Economical Impact of A Dual Gradient Drilling System on Drilling Cost
Authors M. Peker and M. ParlaktunaDual Gradient Drilling (DGD) system is a promising technology that was developed to overcome the deep water drilling problems occurred due to narrow operating window between pore pressure and fracture pressure. In conventional drilling practice, single mud weight exists from drilling unit to TVD (True Vertical Depth) which creates big hydrostatic pressure in bottom hole, moreover, minor changes in mud weight results in big pressure changes proportional to the length of hydrostatic column increase with water depth. On the other hand, DGD allows using two different mud weights to get same bottom hole pressure; low gradient drilling fluid from drilling unit to the sea floor and high gradient drilling fluid form the sea floor to TVD, to decrease the effect of water column on mud hydrostatic pressure in TVD. In this study, a conventionally drilled deep water well was redesigned considering the DGD system and drilled virtually to determine the changes of cost of services and materials on total operation budget to prove the positive impact of system on total operation cost. This study not only proved the technical advantages of the DGD system, but also showed economical impact of the system on total drilling cost, by decreasing around 19%.

A case study for understanding waterflood performance and reservoir connectivity using analytical tools
Authors B. Fernandes, Y. Cabral and E. ArtunUnderstanding waterflood performance and reservoir connectivity is a challenging and critical aspect of reservoir engineering to efficiently employ improved reservoir management strategies. In this paper, application of two commonly used analytical tools for waterflooding evaluation, reciprocal productivity index (RPI) and modified Hall Integral (MHI), is presented for a field that has gone through pattern waterflooding for 10 years. RPI enable to both interpret and understand the performance of active producers in response to the degree of influence by the injectors. By interpreting the behavior of the Hall Integral and the modified Hall Integral it is possible to analyze the individual performance of injectors. Furthermore, both methods can be combined along with the average reservoir pressure variations so as to support the interpretations for understanding performances both producers and injectors.

A Field Application with Liquid Surfactant for Production Optimization
By Ö. SunalLiquid loading in gas wells is a major concern that causes production reduction and shortening of the well life. Liquid loading arises when a gas well is unable to remove the produced liquids from the wellbore. Gas rates below the critical rate are insufficient to remove the liquid and lead to an accumulation in the wellbore which eventually might kill the well. There are various methods to deliquify gas wells, each of which can be implemented as the optimum method in different cases based on the well specifications. Most of these methods can be unsuccessful for highly depleted wells with low reservoir pressures and low flow rates. This study introduces a new field application of deliquification of a gas well in Turkey which is the first successful optimization application in the country through continuous liquid surfactant (foamer) injection. The study focuses on increasing the ultimate recovery of a highly depleted well with intermittent flow due to water buildup issue via unloading the accumulated liquid and producing gas continuously at a stable rate and therefore extending the well life.

Cross-equalization and pre-stack seismic inversion of timelaps land seismic data, Thrace Basin, Turkey
Authors S. Baytok, B. Selek and H. ÖzdemirThis study aims to map undrained gas zones by crossequalization and pre-stack seismic inversion of the base and monitor surveys for sweet spot mapping and discriminating pore fill and pressure changes. 4D land seismic data acquired and used in this study is reasonably in good quality but the repeatability is very poor. Spurious 4D anomalies are present in the data even after parallel processing including deconvolution and pre-stack migration. For land seismic data, this is usually expected but it should be noted that amplitude difference between 4D data is not acceptable, and timelapse difference amplitudes seem not to be reasonable (Figure 1, top panel). As a result, a cross-equalization is required before any attempt of time-lapse data analysis and interpretation. The seismic and inverted acoustic impedance (AI) difference maps of crossequalized time-lapse data showed good agreement with the production data at the producing wells assuming that the changes are due to changes in pore fill only. Possible changes and its effect from pressure decrease due to production need further investigation. The gas production is free of water. It is expected to have no water drive, when the gas in the reservoir is produced the gas-water contact stays at the same level.

Deliquification of Thrace Basin gas wells
More LessThe Thrace basin is located in the European section of NW Turkey. It consists mainly of shallow gas production with a depth of 500 to 1500 meters. These wells exhibit a rapid production decline as rates drop off sharply within the first few months of production. Left unassisted, the production of these wells drops off to unacceptable levels quickly due primarily to liquid loading. In 2012 a project was undertaken to address the liquid loading problem. Candidate wells were selected from the Osmancik, Mezardere, and Teslimkoy formations with the intent of installing plunger lift systems for deliquification. Of the target wells, some had been frac’d and others had not. The expectation was that the fracturing would open up production and that the plunger lift would allow these wells to stay ahead of the liquids. Various types of plungers were used in both continuous flow and conventional plunger lift modes. Automated control options were utilized for auto-optimization and gathering of information via telemetry. The results of the first group of wells showed mixed results. Some showed significant production increases while others merely maintained the production levels and slowed down the production decline. On those wells where the plungers were installed during the steep portion of the decline, the rates continued to drop even after installing artificial lift. An investigation as to the similarities of those showing the best results was done to help identify successful future candidates. Frac sand created an additional problem on several of the wells. Even though the volume of sand had a tendency to decrease after some flow back time, there was still enough sand in some wells to not make plunger lift a viable option. All in all the production was increased significantly. The intent of this paper is to evaluate these wells and help identify further candidates and production results.

Selection Criteria for Water Shut Off Polymer Gel Injection In Carbonate Medium
Authors S. Canbolat and M. ParlaktunaNowadays there remained no giant oil fields has been left undiscovered on shore and maturation of discovered ones have brought difficulties during production. The major one is the higher water production for the petroleum industry, as more reservoirs become mature. Higher water production in oil fields is one of the major difficulties for the petroleum industry, as more reservoirs become mature.

We present here the first section, especially northernmost occurrence known of a Tethyan record of veneriids located close to the Turkey/Syria boundary. The Aphrodina dutrugei (Cocquand, 1862) heterodont bivalve species and monotaxic shell beds which are the focus of this study occurs within the Derdere Formation which form the middle part, Cenomanian interval of the Mardin Group.

Güneydoğu Anadolu (Türkiye) Petrol Sistemi (The Petroleum Systems of Southeast Anatolia (Turkey))
Authors İ. Bahtiyar, İ. Açıkbaş, Ö. Aksu, H. Can and M.G.

Exploration at Miocene Mersin Basin: Outputs of the Preliminary Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling, Mersin Offshore, Turkey, Mediterranean
Authors E. Kansu, H. Yılmaz, S.Y. Çiftçi, İ.P. Hacıköylü and Y.G. KalanyuvaWithin the neighbourhood of onshore Adana and Mut basins at the north, Cyprus at the south and Missis High at the east, Miocene Mersin Basin, is one of the fronteer offshore basins where Turkish Petroleum Corp. has the exploration rights. In order to investigate the hydrocarbon potential of the Miocene Mersin Basin, a 3D basin model was prepared using 2 off-shore wells which are within the project area and outputs of the 2D seismic interpretations. Other then well data, the regional geology and stratigraphy were used to build the chronostratigraphy of the model which begins at 23.2Ma. Using the 12 horizons derived by the seismic interpretations, paleogeometries were established. Not only the isopach maps of formations but also onshore analogies were used to select the appropriate lithologic constituents of the facies. Since Miocene Mersin Basin is a fronteer basin, there are some uncertainities but keeping those in mind, the model shows enough maturity in certain depths for a possible source rock to generate and expel hydrocarbons. Outputs of the 3D basin model of the fronteer Miocene Mersin Basin shows that it has a potential for hydrocarbon exploration.

İskenderun Körfezi Petrol Sistemi ve Modellemesi
More Lessİskenderun Körfezi, Doğu Akdeniz’in kuzeydoğusunda, XIV.
