Cretaceous and Tertiary petroleum systems in the Catatumbo basin (Colombia)
Authors J. Navarro Comet and A. Alaminos MartinezIt is known that around 90% of the world’s hydrocarbons have been generated by a relatively small
number of ultra-rich source intervals deposited during specific periods of geological time. Many mechanisms
have been proposed to explain this particular stratigraphic source rock distribution (oceanic anoxia,
biologic evolution, global climate changes, etc), but its origin is still in debate. It is clear that basins where one
or more of these world class source rocks are present (e.g.: northwest South America, central North Africa)
makes them extraordinarily prolific. However, in most cases all the hydrocarbons found in those areas are
systematically considered to be uniquely sourced by these ultra-rich intervals, neglecting the importance of
other apparently less relevant organic-rich intervals.

Integrated Surface-Downhole Acquisition Geometries – The Way To Higher Detailed Reservoir Investigation
Authors A.A. Tabakov and K.V. BaranovThe increasing demand for detailed exploration of small hydrocarbon deposits and complicated structures
can not always be met by means of conventional seismic surveys such as surface 2D or 3D seismic or
standalone VSP as they feature a number of principal limitations.

Implementation Of The DIPSCAN Method To Estimate Boundary Dips In Complicated Structures By VSP Data
Authors A.A. Tabakov, V.N. Ferentsi and H. GraviniThe knowledge of velocity model not even along well but at offset is key for building of VSP-CDP image
and tie of VSP and surface seismic data. And the task is more difficult in situations of lateral variations of the
media properties, that very typical for highlands. The quality of obtained image is in a straight dependence on
quality of reference model. And it is the main reason to obtain adequate reference model for offset-VSP
processing.

DDR: The Technology Of Simultaneous Wave Field Analysis And Velocity Model Reconstruction
Authors A. Reshetnikov, A. Tabakov, A. Mukhin and V. EliseevThe technology of VSP data processing by means of DDR (Dynamic Decomposition of the
wave-field and Reconstruction of the media) technique consists of several procedures:
1. Construction of the first approximation to
model as a result of kinematical inversion of travel
times and polarizations for visually correlated
events in original data.
2. The synthetic wave parameters are
calculated by ray-tracing method for strongest
event.
3. The estimation of the form of a wave along
calculated arrival times-graph with use of designed
distribution of amplitudes and polarization is
carried out.
4. The located wave is subtracted from an
initial wave field and is projected to the points of scattering on the image section. The waves of
various types from the same point of boundary are stacked with weights proportional to their original
amplitude. The process is repeated for all types of waves and all boundaries until all regular events
are subtracted and projected on section. Not only primary waves, but also multiples may be used in
the process. After imaging the basic model can be corrected and the process may be repeated until
the image will correspond to model with necessary accuracy.

Principles and Techniques of VSP Data Processing
Authors A.A. Tabakov and V.N. FerentsiVertical seismic profiling (VSP) is a popular seismic exploration technology that has been confirmed to be
really efficient for solution of various geological problems even in very complicated conditions. The way
to achieve this and take all of the VSP advantages (such as efficient velocity model recovery, direct impulse
shape estimation and zero-phase deconvolution, detailed surface-borehole tie, high-resolution imaging
and dynamic inversion) is to implement correct processing techniques. In this paper we present key principles of VSP data
processing yielded and inherited as a result of more than 40 years experience in borehole seismic. These
principles form the concept of model based processing technology which includes state-of-the-art developments
and is aimed at high quality and reliability of the acquired results. Demonstrated case histories show examples of
efficiency of the presented technology of VSP data processing.

Integrated 3D seismic data modeling and processing methodology for structural model analysis: Case study
By T. SalinasThe combination of abrupt topography, complex near-surface and sub-surface conditions, and a
significant tri-dimensional component make the Foothills of Colombia an extremely challenging area for seismic
activities. These characteristics are responsible for the absence of high-quality seismic data on these areas and
therefore, they ask for alternative strategies of seismic data processing, modeling and interpretation.

Rigorous And Innovative Risk Quantification For Basin Modeling
Authors A. Medina, J-M. Laigle and M. PontetAssessing petroleum systems using deterministic basin modelling techniques are
nowadays widely used. Such evaluation has a critical impact on strategic decision with both
economical and technical consequences. Decision makers need to rely on the outcomes
of basin models whose main results should therefore feature a probabilistic distribution
expressing the associated risk.

Authors L. Alvarez, D.C. Malizia and Y.M. Graciela PrestíaNeuquen Basin, Argentina. Geochemical Survey in Stratigraphic Traps.
This area presents some difficult challenges to the continued development of this field because of its
structural complexity caused by intense fracturing due to the intrusion of many andesitic sills and dikes.
The results showed that the areal extend of the microseepage anomaly at the surface identified in the
North part of the area approximates the extent of the reservoir, represented by an eolic sandstone deposit.
Also, Low Microseepage value is related to the decrease in the quality of the reservoir.

Subsidence and Geodynamic Analysis Of The Llanos Basin: Linking Mountain Building and Basin Filling Processes
Authors G.Y. Ojeda, G. Bayona, J. Pinilla, M. Cortés and N. GambaSubsidence analysis is a common technique used by the oil industry for definition of the thermal maturity of
source rocks. Here, we performed subsidence analysis via 1D and 2D backstripping to reconstruct the geometry
of a foreland basin (Llanos Basin) that resulted from flexural deformation associated to the growth of an
orogenic belt (Eastern Cordillera). Examples from two regional cross sections illustrate this foreland basin -
orogenic belt coupled evolution.

A New Page in the History of Reservoir Characterization in the Andes Sedimentary Basin Area, with the Introduction of State of the Art LWD Formation Evaluation Services
Authors A. Carvalho, J. Sierra, L. Sanchez, R. Medina, M. Cevallos, W. Gonzalez and R. SantacruzThe continuous increase in demand of HC resources and the exhaustion of the simplest
reservoir deposits have forced the oil industry to focus on the development of more complex
reservoir targets and drilling profiles. This scenario becomes even more challenging in Sub-Andean
sedimentary basins, given the diversity of depositional environments and the active history of
tectonic stresses that brings into view the additional complication of drilling safety.

Drilling Sweeps Optimization Based On Downhole Measurements
Authors Y. Arevalo, R. Harmer and J. PalacioHole cleaning is an important consideration when drilling any type of well and it becomes more
difficult as hole angle increases. Drilling sweeps are used to improve the removal of solids from the
wellbore. However, the indiscriminate use of sweeps can often lead to higher costs and even
hamper hole cleaning if not used properly. Selection and use of sweeps is historically carried
out using local experience and qualitative indicators.

Tectonic Evolution And Preservation Of Relict Structures In A Triangle Zone: The Tácata Triangle Zone (Maturín Basin, Eastern Venezuela)
Authors O. Férnandez, M.C. Morales, K. Parra and N. SantiagoThe Tácata structure in Eastern Venezuela is a vertical stack of south- and north-verging thrust sheets
within a triangle zone. The Tácata trend evolved as an interplay of regional plate-driven compression and
critical-taper driven thrusting. As a result, it records the relatively stationary deformation front of the Serranía del
Interior fold-and-thrust belt in this area from the Early Miocene to present day. This led to the preservation of
relict triangle zone structures, a unique feature in thrust belt deformation fronts, where relict structures are
commonly exhumed and eroded.

Structures Growing And Decollement Level Role In The Sub Andean Zone Of Bolivia. Caipipendi Block.
Authors I. Moretti, J. Letouzey, A. Otero and J.C. CalvoThe Sub Andean Zone of Bolivia is a very prolific exploration zone. During the last ten years, the
exploration targets have changed. Numerous oil fields have been discovered in the years 70-90 in the
Carboniferous and upper Devonian in the foreland and easternmost emerging anticlines but the exploration get
now more active westward with deepest targets in the lower Devonian. The existence of this petroleum system
was proven since the discovery of the San Alberto field (San Alberto-X9 in 1990), but the deep prospects in the
south SAZ are much targeted only from 10 years. In addition on the cost of the deep wells, moving westward
also means steeper anticlines and poor resolution of the seismic images. For the geologists however, the more
challenging issues come from the fact that the target is now below an important decollement level, the middle
Devonian shale of the Los Monos Fm.

How To Better Define The Structures Using 2D And 3D Restoration Tools In Complex Areas. Case Study In The Sub Andean Zone, Bolivia.
Authors I. Moretti, A. Macris, J.F. Lecomte, V. Delos, A. Leclerc, J. Letouzey, A. Otero and J.C. CalvoWhen working in complex areas, explorationists must be able
- to propose geometry of the prospect to drill,
- to have an idea of the timing of the deformation (to
know if the structure is post or pre-oil maturation/
migration process)
- and to define the expected reservoir characteristics
often based on its fractures.
Geometry in complex zone could be hard to define, especially onshore in fold and thrust-belt where seismic quality is poor (high relief and steep flank structures).
Fractures density and timing of growth of the structure versus oil maturation require to have an idea of the kinematics of the deformation. None of these questions
could be solved without the appropriated tools. Integrated software is required to synthesize the data, imagine the missing part of the sub-surface geometry,
check the coherency of the first model, improve it through restoration in 2 and 3D, and finally propose a history of the deformation.

Integrated Structural and Fracture Modeling of Piedemonte area, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia
Authors D.R. Richards, F. Corredor, A.F. Ortiz, G.C. Meza and R. BeltranProduction in the Cupiagua field is at high rates
from generally low porosity sandstone units, suggesting
that fractures make a major contribution to the
production. Maximizing the production through the life of
the field depends on an understanding of the fracture
network and its connectivity. The primary objective of
this study was to integrate all significant data and apply it
to create fracture models, which aid in optimizing
production.

Caño Limón: Una Anomalía Geoquímica Que Podría Representar Un Sistema Petrolífero No Convencional En Colombia. Evidencias E Implicaciones Exploratorias

3-D Seismic Design, Distortion During the Acquisition.
Authors M. Pareja, E. Poveda and G. EspinozaIn 3D seismic acquisition, it could expected that when
the design is drawn on the terrain, the maximum
quantity of stations can be located in the theoretical
points and be conserve in a high percent the
geophysical attributes. Nevertheless, local conditions
–environmental norms and social patterns- restrict the
final location, which implies the individual or multiple
displacements of stations to the locations not planned
in the original design, causing distortion directly to it.

Authors S.E. Guevara, R. Acevedo, C.C. Piedrahita and J.E. CalderónThe 3D seismic method has a huge potential to obtain
structural information in the Eastern Foothills
(Piedemonte Llanero) of Colombia. However its practical
use has been reduced by the rough terrain and complex
geology in this setting, which, among other effects,
generates almost unpredictable wavepaths. This paper
illustrates the application of seismic modelling to test and
optimize the seismic acquisition parameters of a 3D
seismic survey at this zone.

Remaining Hydrocarbon Potential in the Subandean Basins: A Regional Perspective
More LessOver 40 BBOE were discovered in the Subandean Basins of western South America. However few large
discoveries have been made during the last five years, thus rising concerns about the future prospectivity of the
area. This study analyzes the remaining potential of Subandean Basins based on the fractal analysis of
discovered fields as well and on the geographical distribution of the accumulations. Thus, the reserves of
Subandean Basins were combined in latitudinal segments from Tierra del Fuego to Lake Maracaibo with
the assumption that given a common petroleum system, segments of reserves should have an even distribution.
Deviations from this pattern could indicate negative aspects of maturity, absence of source rock, lack of
structures (or timing), or that hydrocarbons remain to be found or have migrated to other areas.

Anisotropic pre-stack depth migration in the Cusiana and Cupiagua Sur Fields
Authors J. Checa, M. Mesa, N. Burke, J. Calderon, H. Alfonso, U. Egozi, B. Ver West and M. YatesThe eastern foothills of Colombian western Cordillera is a region with a complex structural history that involves
an early shortening parallel to bedding and a folding phase prior to the Andean Orogeny. This was followed
by in-sequence thrusting that produced the main structures and finally a phase of out-of-sequence
thrusting. Seismic imaging of the BP operated Cusiana and Cupiagua Sur fields has been a big challenge since
the exploration phase and as the depletion of the fields continues, the need for accurate event positioning and
focusing becomes more and more critical in order to optimize infill wells location and reservoir management
in general.

A New Strategy to Capturing Stranded Reserves in the Fluvial- Deltaic Systems of Occidental’s Cravo Norte Field Complex.
Authors L.M. Jiménez and O.A. PatinoThis paper reports on the use of a number of novel 3-D seismic interpretation techniques being
applied to identify and develop stranded reserves in the Upper Carbonera (C5) fluvio-deltaic channel
sands in the Cravo Norte Field complex. Occidental de Colombia, as field operator,
acquired a high-fold 3-D in 2005 in part to image these channels. This new data, enhanced by
seismic coherency and spectral decomposition processing, allow us to image the spatial
distribution and temporal evolution of the channel system and associated facies. The seismic
interpretation has been tied to core, wireline and (partially) production data. Qualitative and
quantitative seismic geomorphologic techniques are being used to identify the geometries of the
channels.

High Quality 3D Seismic and Dynamic Modeling as a Means to Identify 2.0 MMBO of P2 Reserves in By-passed Pay in the Mature Matanegra Area, Cravo Norte Field Complex
Authors C. Malagon, H. Mackualo, A. Caliz, A. Lozano, C. Valdes and W. BayneAcquisition and analysis of a new 3D seismic data set, combined with refinements in
the Cravo Norte geologic model has led to a detailed numerical simulation model, identifying
2.0 MMBO of proven undeveloped reserves. . These reserves were either by-passed or not
included in the original development scheme. This work describes how true symbiosis between the
Geoscience and Reservoir Engineering Teams has added tremendous value by identifying
incremental reserves. Changes in the development scheme to target these reserves,
including horizontal well applications, will also be discussed. The techniques used are applicable to
other marginal marine reservoirs.

High Effort 3D Design for End of Life Field Cravo Norte 3D
More LessCaño Limon produced its billionth barrel of oil in 2004. In the same year, the production
contract was renegotiated to cover the remaining economic life of the field. As part of this contract
extension, Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) committed to a new 3D seismic survey. The
original 3D, acquired in 1985 had been pushed beyond what it was capable of reliably
delivering. A new 3D was needed that would facilitate inversion and the mapping of subtle
faults and small channels. Current technology and open minded management allowed the
technical team to design for geologic, processing and mapping objectives without first dictating
budget. The results are a world class onshore 3D that will help extend the life of Caño Limon by
identifying the remaining small accumulations of oil.

Una Revisión al Estado del Arte del “Play” de Fallas Antitéticas en la Cuenca Llanos Orientales, Colombia
Authors J.C.

Applying DHI/AVO Best Practices to Successfully Identify Key Risks Associated with a Fizz-Water Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator in the Norwegian Sea
Authors W.A. Fahmy and J.M. ReillySeveral years ago ExxonMobil developed a best practice process to evaluate and understand risk in DHIdependent
plays. Within this best practice, a robust processing stream, rigorous analysis process, and a
calibrated DHI-rating system using both DHI and data quality characteristics were designed. The rating system
provides a valuable structure for evaluating DHI quality on a risk analysis basis. The example presented shows
how applying best practices can help identify the key risks prior to drilling the first well in a frontier basin in the
Norwegian Sea. Using our best practice methodology the main risk identified was low gas saturation (fizzwater),
even though no low gas saturated sands were previously encountered in the area. Subsequent drilling
confirmed our prediction. In this talk we will summarize our pre-drill analysis and share learnings from the drill
well results.

Forward modeling to improve seismic acquisition design
Authors P.A.C. Barbosa, J.A. Jaramillo and J.H. OlayaAcquisition parameters can be improved through forward modeling employing ray tracing theory. If
previous information about a certain target area is available, and depending on the desired acquisition
geometry, a 2D or 3D elastic earth model driven by the subsurface geology and structure can be constructed;
and its seismic response compared with the available seismic information used to obtain the underlying
structural interpretation. Such a model can be used to simulate wave propagation in the subsurface as a
function of different parameters, allowing for the selection of the best cost-illumination acquisition design
to improve seismic image quality.
